The lids are supposed to be put in boiling water to sit, not boil on the stove. Putting lids in "boiling" water is to soften the rubber. The lids need to soften for about 5 or 10 minutes.Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14991571309786149363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9104582182197134900.post-18783628231254375522014-10-13T23:50:37.754-04:002014-10-13T23:50:37.754-04:00WhooHoo!WhooHoo!Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11407369355796077745noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9104582182197134900.post-57455085823869883952014-09-23T16:20:12.097-04:002014-09-23T16:20:12.097-04:00I've been canning for barely a year (not count...I've been canning for barely a year (not counting as a child with the family wimmens) and have had ZERO problems simply heating the lids in my crockpot (dry). I might have sterilized them by pouring boiling water over them, but I thought that was the reasoning behind it, not softening rubber.
Only time I ever have a sealing failure is if a speck of food/seed got under the gasket, or there was a flaw in the rim of the jar.
SueAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11285823437331302338noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9104582182197134900.post-77722413374700197022014-08-24T12:48:01.357-04:002014-08-24T12:48:01.357-04:00Wow! Think about it, the who purpose of the canning process is to kill the bacteria so there is no need to sterilize anything to start with.
